Spartans Take 100th Rose Bowl

Connor Cook threw for 332 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as number-four Michigan State held off number-five Stanford 24-20 in the 100th Rose Bowl Game. Cook connected with Tony Lippett for the game-winning TD with 13:22 left in the contest. The Spartans won their first Rose Bowl since 1988 and finished the season at 13-and-1. Pac-12 champion Stanford closed the year at 11-and-3.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Gus Kleekamp with the Washington Junior Legion Baseball Team. Gus played shortstop and occasionally pitched during the season. His numbers are impressive. Batting average .409, on-base percentage .504 with a slugging percentage of .582. Gus lead the team not only with his average but also in RBI with 26, triples with five and stolen bases with 28.

There are few things more inspiring in life than watching an octogenarain with two hip replacements swimming a 200 yard race, or guys in their late 70's playing some pretty vigorous 3 on 3 basketball. Shelby Miller and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Cardinals beat the Padres 6-2 to avoid a three-game sweep from Petco Park. Miller improved to 8-and-8 after throwing six innings of two-run ball. Oscar Taveras hit a two-run homer, and Matt Holiday drove in pair of runs in the victory. St. Louis roughed up rookie Odrisamer Despaigne for six runs on nine hits in five-and-two-thirds innings.
