Pirates Pummel Cardinals

Pedro Alvarez hit a pair of homers as the Pirates cruised to a 12-2 win over the Cardinals at PNC Park. Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and three runs as Pittsburgh moved to 3-and-1. Travis Ishikawa also went deep while Andrew McCutchen and Russell Martin had two hits and two RBI each. Gerrit Cole twirled seven innings of two-ball for the victory. Matt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for St. Louis while Matt Holliday added a pair of hits. Shelby Miller was shelled for five runs in five-and-a-third innings as the Cards dipped to 2-and-2.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Junior Basketball Player Hailey Diestelkamp with the Owensville Dutchgirls. She recently became the all-time scoring leader at Owensville High School surpassing Katie Davis. Hailey played volleyball her first two years of high school, but after suffering an injury playing basketball last summer, she decided to focus on basketball this year. Hailey runs track in the spring.

It came as a shock to a lot of people to find out that the contract for the Union license office, which has been operated by the Union Chamber of Commerce since the 1970's, was being turned over to a for-profit company based out of Jefferson City.

What happened? It's a classic case of two all-too-common phenomena in the world of government--unintended consequences and the revolving door.

Saint Louis erased a nine-point second half deficit and had a shot to win it late, but fell 60-56 against UMass Saturday in a thrilling Atlantic 10 Conference game at Chaifetz Arena. It was the fourth loss in a row for the Billikens, who fall to 9-12 overall and 1-7 in league play. UMass improves to 12-9 overall and 5-3 in the A-10. The Billikens had the ball down by two with the shot clock off.
