Pirates Dump Cardinals

After falling behind 2-0 the Pirates scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined and held on for a 5-3 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Russell Martin hit a two-run homer in the seven inning and Andrew McCutched put Pittsburgh ahead with a bases-loaded walk. A.J. Burnett improved to 2-and-2 dealing six innings of two-run ball ball six strikeouts. Jason Grilli nailed down his 10th save despite allowing a Carlos Beltran RBI double in the ninth. The Pirates are 14-and-10 only a half-game behind the 14-and-9 Cards in the Central Division. Pete Kozma had an one-run single for St. Louis in sixth inning. Reliever Joe Kelly took the loss after Jake Westbrook pitched six perfect innings allowing six hits and striking out six.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Sullivan Senior Baseball Player Matt Foster. Matt pitched a no hitter against Union in a game at GCS Ballpark in Illinois Friday night. He struck out 13 batters and walked four while throwing 111 pitches. He also had one hit in the game. Matt is also very good with the bat. His .520 average and 14 runs batted in leads the team.

Early Thursday morning, I received news that vandals had broken in to St. Francis Borgia Grade School in Washington, causing extensive damage to several classrooms and offices. School was closed for the day as the Washington Police Department went about their business of securing what had changed from a school community to a crime scene overnight.
