Peavy to the Giants

The Boston Red Sox shipped veteran Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants on
Saturday. The Giants hope the move bolsters their rotation as they are locked in a tight battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers for NL West supremacy. Boston acquired two minor league pitchers, Edwin Escobar and Heath Hembree, in exchange for the 33-year-old Peavy and cash considerations. Escobar and Hembree were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. A former National League Cy Young Award winner, Peavy was 1-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 outings for the Red Sox this season. The right-hander's run support average of 2.76 was the second-lowest among all AL starting pitchers.
