D'backs Down Cards In Opener

A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a two-run double as the Diamondbacks downed the Cardinals 6-2 in the season opener for both clubs at Chase Field. Matt Holliday and Daniel Descalso plated a run each for the Redbirds in defeat. Adam Wainwright fanned six, but allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits in six frames to suffer the loss.

The Cardinals and D'backs get right back at it tonight in the desert. The second game of the three-game series in Arizona is set for tonight, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m. Jaime Garcia will start for St. Louis, while the Snakes counter with Trevor Cahill. Lance Lynn and Brandon McCarthy square off in the finale tomorrow night.

OFF THE CUFF with Diane Jones

It came as a shock to a lot of people to find out that the contract for the Union license office, which has been operated by the Union Chamber of Commerce since the 1970's, was being turned over to a for-profit company based out of Jefferson City.

What happened? It's a classic case of two all-too-common phenomena in the world of government--unintended consequences and the revolving door.
