Cubs Blank Cardinals

Edwin Jackson fired seven shutout innings to pace the Cubs to a 3-0 win over the Cardinals in Chicago. Jackson allowed three hits while striking out five as he moved to 6-and-10. Anthony Rizzo knocked in all three runs for Chicago, which has won five-of-six. Starlin Castro was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs in the win. Kevin Gregg picked up his 16th save. Allen Craig was 2-for-4 for St. Louis, which had won five in-a-row. Jake Westbrook gave up all the runs in seven frames for the loss. The series continues today.

Game two is this afternoon at 3:05. Joe Kelly will oppose Carlos Villanueva.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Gus Kleekamp with the Washington Post 218 Junior American Legion Baseball Team. Gus pitches, plays shortstop and bats third on the Junior Legion team that won the state championship in Blue Springs over the weekend. He posted the save in a 4-3 win over Festus in the title game. His batting average is .400 with 47-rbi and 47 runs scored.

The Washington Post 218 Seniors are headed to state. Washington cruised through the zone 1 tournament capping off their run with a 14-9 win over Moberly in the championship game Sunday afternoon. Washington led by 10 into the bottom of the ninth. Matt Miller was the winning pitcher as Washington improved to 33-3 on the season. Ross Seitter, Aaron Meyer and Nate Hillermann all had two hits apiece. Washington banged out 14 as a team.
