Cardinals Top Phillies

Mark Ellis tallied two RBI to help the Cardinals knock off the Phillies 5-3 at Busch Stadium. Jhonny Peralta drove in two in the win while Jon Jay added a RBI. Carlos Martinez won his first game of the season with five innings of three-run ball and Trevor Rosenthal notched his 22nd save for the Cards, who have won two straight. Cody Asche plated all the runs for Philadelphia with a bases clearing double. Kyle Kendrick was rocked for five runs in six innings to fall to 3-and-7. The Phillies have dropped two in a row.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Senior Taylor Covington with the New Haven Track and Field Team. Taylor earned All-State honors medaling in four events at the state track meet at Lincoln University in Jefferson City Friday and Saturday. She ran anchor on the 4X800 relay team that finished in sixth place.

Commencement, it is said, is a beginning. Yet graduations are also the end of an era--for students and their parents. For the kids, it's a time of excitement and promise. For parents, it's a bit more bittersweet.

What will the future hold for the Class of 2015? Time will tell.

My youngest has now graduated from high school. Back in 1980, I was the youngest of my family who graduated.

John Lackey and two relievers combined on a six-hitter as the Cardinals blanked the Dodgers, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game set in St. Louis. Lackey scattered five hits and a walk while striking out nine to improve to 3-and-3. Trevor Rosenthal worked a perfect ninth for his 14 save. Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta each doubled in runs for the Cardinals, who have won five in-a-row.
