Cardinals Smash Rockies

The Cardinals enjoyed an offensive outburst with 18 hits in an 11-4 pounding of the Rockies at Coors Field. The Cards' top three hitters in the order combined for 10 hits, five RBI and six runs scored. Former Rockie Matt Holliday led the group going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Yadier Molina and Daniel Descalso also drove in runs for St. Louis. Joe Kelly got the win after shutting out Colorado on three hits over five innings.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Gus Kleekamp with the Washington Post 218 Junior American Legion Baseball Team. Gus pitches, plays shortstop and bats third on the Junior Legion team that won the state championship in Blue Springs over the weekend. He posted the save in a 4-3 win over Festus in the title game. His batting average is .400 with 47-rbi and 47 runs scored. As a pitcher, he's 5-0 with an ERA of 1.631 and a WHIP of .961.

The Washington Seniors are in Sedalia for the state tournament. Post 218 will begin play with a match-up against Manchester at 7:00 this evening. Washington is 33-3 on the season under Manager Mike Gardner. Manchester is 18-7. The game will be broadcast live on KLPW-AM 1220. The other game has Hillcrest going up against Fike-Post 499 from Blue Springs at 4:00.
