Cardinals Release McClellan

The Cardinals have released reliever Kyle McClellan. The right-hander made 244 relief appearances since 2008 and has a career 3.69 ERA. St. Louis also signed catcher Rob Johnson to a minor league deal. The 30-year-old split time between the Mets and their Triple-A team in Buffalo last season.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny received a single third-place vote for National League Manager of the Year. Matheny finished tied for fifth with Padres manager Bud Black. The vote came from David Lennon of "Newsday" in the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Nationals skipper Davey Johnson won the award.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Seth Schenck. The New Haven Junior won the state title in the the 800 meter run at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. His time of 1:59.20 set a new school record. Seth also took second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:30.49 and anchored the 4X800 relay team that captured seventh place. Seth also played basketball and ran cross country in his junior year at New Haven.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association State Track and Field Championships get underway Friday in Classes 3 and 4. 70 local athletes representing, Washington, Borgia, Union, St. Clair, Pacific, Sullivan, Warrenton, Owensville and St. James will compete in the two day event at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
