Cardinals Beat Down Pirates

Joe Kelly tossed five-and-a-third innings of one-run ball to lead the Cardinals in a 6-1 win over the Pirates at PNC Park. Kelly allowed six hits and four walks but struck out four to improve to 1-and-0. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer and Yadier Molina added a solo shot for St. Louis, which improved to 3-and-2. Francisco Liriano was tagged for four runs over six frames to suffer the loss for Pittsburgh. Travis Snider was 2-for-4 in the loss as the Bucs fell to 3-and-2.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Gus Kleekamp with the Washington Junior Legion Baseball Team. Gus played shortstop and occasionally pitched during the season. His numbers are impressive. Batting average .409, on-base percentage .504 with a slugging percentage of .582. Gus lead the team not only with his average but also in RBI with 26, triples with five and stolen bases with 28.

There are few things more inspiring in life than watching an octogenarain with two hip replacements swimming a 200 yard race, or guys in their late 70's playing some pretty vigorous 3 on 3 basketball. A generation of baby boomers is learning that, while they can't reverse age, they certainly can embrace life!

St. Louis held training camp over the weekend but will be off today before resuming practice tomorrow. Quarterback Sam Bradford practiced on back-to-back days for the first time since suffering his season ending knee injury. St. Louis will put the pads on early this week as they prepare for their preseason contest against the Saints on August 8th.
