Playing Politics with America's Heroes

Audio:

Among the many closures involved in the federal government shutdowns are the memorials to our nation's veterans of war. In true fighting spirit, an Honor Flight group from Mississippi, confronted with barricades blocking the World War II Memorial, charged ahead and made their visit anyway. These aren't grade school kids on a day trip, these are military veteran's in their 80's and 90's for whom this may be their only chance to see the memorial created in their honor.

Clearly, the shutdown is the result of stark ideological differences, with principled stands being made on both sides. Letting octogenarians from the Greatest Generation visit their memorial is one rare point upon which I'd think members of Congress could agree. In similar fashion, continuing efforts to reduce the VA health system backlog would also appear to be a no brainer.

Unfortunately, rather than agree on funding at least these areas, members of Congress--particularly Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid--would rather see how much damage these issues can inflict. A bill specifically addressing memorials and VA funding has been passed by the House and put before the Senate for purely political reasons.

Enough! Can't Congress agree on at least this much? We owe it to our nation's veterans.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Union Senior Bethany Coons. Bethany finished the basketball season at Union averaging 11 points and eight assists per game. Coach Dusty Weiskopf says Bethany is good at handling the basketball and teams would find it difficult to press Union when Bethany was in the game because of her lateral movement. When combining her scoring and assist averages, Bethany was contributing about 25 points per game.

On March 24, 2015, Lufthansa Airlines pilot Andreas Lubitz steered a planeful of passengers into the French Alps, killing 150 people in a grisly act of murder/suicide.

The logical first question the world is asking is why? We ask this not only to make some sort of rational sense out of the irrational act, but also so that we can try to prevent something like it from happening again.
