WASHINGTON, MO. - Local author Laura (Brandt) Miller recently visited Washington Middle School. She talked to Mrs. Kaylin Bade’s seventh-grade Language Arts classes about writing realistic fiction.

“They were all so eager to learn about writing and what it takes to be an author,” Miller said. “We talked about everything from writing the first line of a scene to molding a character to how long it takes to write a book.”

Miller is a young adult author who has six published novels. She graduated from New Haven High School in 2002, has a Bachelor’s of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and took a break from writing her seventh novel to talk to the seventh graders.

“I fully expect to see some published authors come from these two classes one day,” Miller said of the Washington Middle School students. “And I told them that when their books are turned into movies, I want a ticket to the premiere.”

Miller’s most recent novel, “A Bird on a Windowsill” has been a bestseller since being released on June 20th.  Miller also appeared on the KLPW Diane Jones Morning Show.  You can listen to her interview below.
