Cards Clip Pirates

Matt Holliday's go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning held up as the Cardinals clipped the Pirates 3-2 in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park. Jon Jay drove in the other run and then scored in the three-run seventh for the Redbirds, who have won six of their last eight. John Lackey fired seven innings of one-run ball as he improved to 2-and-1 with St. Louis and 13-and-8 overall. Trevor Rosenthal closed it out for his 39th save.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Senior Taylor Covington with the New Haven Track and Field Team. Taylor earned All-State honors medaling in four events at the state track meet at Lincoln University in Jefferson City Friday and Saturday. She ran anchor on the 4X800 relay team that finished in sixth place.

Commencement, it is said, is a beginning. Yet graduations are also the end of an era--for students and their parents. For the kids, it's a time of excitement and promise. For parents, it's a bit more bittersweet.

What will the future hold for the Class of 2015? Time will tell.

My youngest has now graduated from high school. Back in 1980, I was the youngest of my family who graduated.

Ben Stephens pitched into the ninth inning leading Warrenton to a 5-0 win over Washington at Ronsick Field. Stephens struck out 10 and walked three before leaving the game. Washington loaded the bases in the ninth, but the game was called when heavy rain and lightning moved in. Warrenton scored single runs in the first, sixth, and seventh and added two insurance runs in the ninth.
