Official Policy for Candidates Electioneering Outside of Polling Places

Issues with candidates electioneering outside of polling places have caused problems in the past, but now the Franklin County Commission has made an official policy. County Clerk Debbie Door says that the rules haven’t changed; now they are just set in stone. In the past, candidates have taken issues with polling locations not allowing them to campaign and put up signs on Election Day. Debbie Door says that all polling locations are private property and even public property like schools are run by a board, and that board has the right to decide if a candidate can electioneer outside of their facility. There are only a handful of locations that do not allow candidates or their representatives to electioneer; most of these locations are churches. These churches may have an issue with something on the ballot such as abortion related proposals, so they don’t allow anyone to put up signs so that they are being fair. Door says she will contact all the candidates about the policy and the locations that they can or cannot electioneer, but it will be their responsibility to know where they are allowed. According to the policy, failure of a candidate or their representative to abide by this policy may result in removal of the offending party from the premises by officers of the sheriff’s department.
