Drug Runner Shot By Police

A car chase with a wanted drug trafficker ended peacefully but not before shots were fired. On May 10, at approximately 12:32 PM, Sheriff Gary Toelke says the Missouri State Highway Patrol observed a vehicle out of Illinois that was wanted for drug trafficking. The sighting was on I-44 near Stanton. It was reported that a check revealed that the driver had several warrants for his arrest. They Highway Patrol was unable to stop or catch up to the vehicle and requested assistance from Franklin County Deputies. At one point, the Highway Patrol got in pursuit of the vehicle but they were delayed in continuing. A Franklin County Deputy took over the pursuit which went East on I-44 toward Pacific. As the vehicle approached the Pacific Exit a Pacific Officer deployed spikes. At the same time a Franklin County Deputy attempted to block the vehicle. The driver then pointed a handgun at the deputy and drove around the spikes. The pursuit continued East on I-44 where it was joined by St. Louis County Police, the Highway Patrol, and Eureka Police. The driver drove through several subdivisions and yards to elude law enforcement. The driver also stopped several times but did not exit the vehicle. After stopping, he would accelerate; however, the speed of the pursuit reduced in the area of the subdivisions. The vehicle was eventually stopped in a subdivision where several shots were fired by law enforcement. He was removed from the scene by ambulance.

When our daughter turned 13, as part of her birthday celebration we drove 13 seventh-grade girls to the mall. As one of the drivers, I can attest that a vanload of young adolescent girls generates plenty of chatter...and plenty of drama.
