Car Thief Shot by Police

A car thief is in custody today after being shot by a Franklin County Deputy. For the past two weeks Pacific Police and Franklin County deputies made several attempts to conduct traffic stops on 31 year old Timothy Kalter as he traveled through Franklin County. According to reports, Franklin County Deputies spotted Kalter at a Phillips 66 gas station around 3 p.m. in Villa Ridge. Authorities believe Kalter has been involved in several crimes since his release from prison on November 15. Kalter and police were involved in several pursuits that exceeded 100 MPH but authorities made the decision to discontinue the chases because of safety concerns. Thursday officers made another attempt to take Kalter into custody, but he fled police. Later in the day, Kalter was spotted at the Burger King near Highway AT and Highway 100 where a Franklin County officer tried to apprehend the suspect. Kalter instead jumped in his car, and fired up the engine. When the officer attempted to reach in the car to turn the engine off, Kalter pressed down on the accelerator, dragging the officer along. The officer then drew his weapon and began to fire. The officer shot Kalter in the arm and torso. According to reports, the officer was taken to Mercy in Washington with minor injuries and later released. Even though he was wounded, Kalter fled on Interstate 44 toward St. Louis County, temporarily losing police. The pursuit ended on westbound I-44 near Pacific when a St. Louis county police officer was able to stop the vehicle. Kalter then surrendered and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Washington and then to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. Police say his condition is currently unknown.
