Sam Katzung

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Washington Senior American Legion Catcher Sam Katzung. Sam is currently batting .317 with eight rbi and nine runs scored. Katzung is a good contact hitter and has only struck out four times this season and he has walked five times. Manager Mike Gardner says Sam does an outstanding job of blocking pitches in the dirt. He has displayed a strong arm and has thrown out several runners on the base paths with snap throws to first and on steal attempts at second and third. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to handle the pitching staff. He calls a good game and communicates with teammates. Sam split time behind the plate with Matt Jones last year, but this year he is the number one catcher on the roster. Sam also had a good season at Washington High School. He batted .296 and led the team with 24 batted in. Sam graduated this past spring.

Sam had three hits with two runs scored in Wednesday's 14-3 win over St. Peters at the Rec Plex.

Commencement, it is said, is a beginning. Yet graduations are also the end of an era--for students and their parents. For the kids, it's a time of excitement and promise. For parents, it's a bit more bittersweet.

What will the future hold for the Class of 2015? Time will tell.

My youngest has now graduated from high school. Back in 1980, I was the youngest of my family who graduated.
