Megan Micke

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Washington Softball Player Megan Micke. The Junior Shortstop had a terrific start to the season helping the Jays to a second place finish in the Union Tournament Saturday. In three games, Megan had 11 plate appearances, eight official at-bats, four hits, including a double, an rbi, a stolen base with six runs scored, three walks and two strike outs. Megan batted .500 with a .636 on base percentage, a slugging percentage of .625 and her OPS was 1.261. Megan leads off and has a combination of speed and power and she can hit the ball to all fields. At short, Megan has good range side to side and front to back with a strong arm. She was called up and played varsity ball late in her sophomore season.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Senior Middle Blocker Amanda Vollmer of the Washington Blue Jays. She helped the team capture the championship of the 60th Annnual Hermann Tournament with a two set win over St. Francis Borgia last week. Amanda described the title win as the highlight of her high school career to this point. She will play volleyball at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she will study nursing.

No matter how many years pass, few of us old enough to understand the scope of what happened on September 11, 2001 will ever forget those video images of planes flying through skyscrapers, which then crumbled into dust. Perhaps out of psychological necessity, we have distanced ourselves from the visceral emotions of that day.

Julio Teheran hurled six scoreless frames and the bullpen completed the shutout as the Braves blanked the Cardinals, 4-0 at Turner Field. Teheran scattered five hits and fanned six to improve to 11-and-8. Daniel Castro homered, tripled, and scored twice to lead Atlanta. Jaime Garcia gave up two runs over four frames to take the loss for St. Louis, which rested most of its regular starters.
