Learn More About COPD Management

Do you or does someone you know have trouble breathing? The clinicians of Mercy offer an educational program chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, which will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Southpointe Assisted Living, 5125 Old Highway 100 in Washington. The workshop is open to the public.

Emphysema and chronic asthmatic bronchitis are the two main conditions that make up chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness and chronic cough, which worsen over time, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.

COPD is a leading cause of death and illness. Most COPD is caused by long-term smoking and can be prevented by not smoking or quitting as soon as possible. Lung damage cannot be reversed, so treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and minimizing further damage. The presentation by Mercy clinicians will focus on managing symptoms.

In 2008, 13.1 million U.S. adults (aged 18 and over) were estimated to have COPD. Because close to 24 million adults in the United States have impaired lung function, it is believed that COPD is under diagnosed. Specific X-rays, labs and pulmonary function tests can confirm COPD. Pulmonologists specialize in this field of medicine.

Recently released statistics show that immigration to the United States has accounted for 82% of the population growth over the past 8 years.

This may be an alarming fact to a number of people, especially conservatives who do not trust President Obama on this issue. The fact is, however, that this trend has been going on for decades.
