There was a 67% voter turn-out in Franklin County Tuesday and all results are unofficial until they are certified Thursday.

Jay Nixon will remain the Governor of Missouri with a 55% win over Challenger Dave Spence’s 43%. Nixon becomes the first two term governor since Mel Carnahan won a second term in 1996. Nixon won Franklin County by only 535 votes. Governor Nixon will face another hostile legislature. Both the House and Senate now have veto-proof majorities of Republicans.

Incumbents ruled the day on yesterday’s statewide ballot. Incumbent Republican Peter Kinder won the Lieutenant Governor’s race over Susan Montee by a 49 to 45% margin. Treasurer Clint Zweifel and Attorney General Chris Koster also held on to their offices. Democratic state representative Jason Kander of Kansas City edged Republican Shane Schoeller for the Secretary of State’s office.
Republican Dave Schatz won the race for State Representative by a wide margin in the 61st district. Franklin County voters chose Paul Curtman over Ann Schroeder for the office of State Representative of the 109th district with a 58 to 42% vote. Mike Schatz will be the new Franklin County Commissioner in the second district joining Tim Brinker in the first District to take office on January 1st. Schatz won with 61% of the votes to Democrat Teresa Connelly’s 39%. Tom Copeland will remain the Franklin County Assessor over challenger Angela Beckett.
In one of the closest races of the evening Julie Bowen held on to a narrow lead for the office of Public Administrator, until the last few precincts reported, and ended up losing the race to Mary Jo Straatmann by only 363 votes.
The 10 cent property tax increase to provide funding for those with developmental disabilities in Franklin County failed by a 54 to 46% vote
The 1 cent sales tax increase for road improvement in the city of Gerald passed with 318 for and 190 against.
And the Strain-Japan R16 school district 35 cent tax levy increase passed with 258 votes for and 210 votes against.
State wide proposition B-the tobacco tax increase-failed by a narrow margin.
Missouri voters have passed a ballot measure limiting the governor’s ability to implement part of President Barack Obama’s health care law. Prop E to prohibit the establishment of a health care exchange passed by a large margin.
The way judges are selected in Missouri will stay the same with Amendment 3 failing
Prop A passed with a 64 to 36% vote, so St. Louis will now have local control over the police department
