Armed Gunman Caught

The man who caused area schools to go on lock down yesterday is now in custody. The incident started when a Franklin County Deputy noticed a car driving in a careless manner on Highway A in Krakow. After a traffic stop was conducted on 24 year old Derrick Howard of Union he took off. The chase led police to Diener Road outside Washington where Howard hit a dead end. He took off on foot wearing camouflage and a high powered SKS rifle with a 30 round clip of ammunition according to the deputy. At this point area schools were contacted and put on lock down. Franklin County Deputies, Washington Police and the Highway Patrol responded to the scene. After a 45 minute search, a resident on Holtgrewe Road called police after spotting the suspect. Following the arrest of Howard police began searching the area for the rifle and found it hidden in a tree near the area where he fled.
