Aassociate Principal at Washington High School has Been Named the 2013 Missouri Assistant Principal of the Year

Dr. Kelly McCallum, associate principal at Washington High School, has been named the 2013 Missouri Assistant Principal of the Year. McCallum was selected based upon the impact she makes in providing collaborative leadership, her involvement in curriculum, instructions and assessment, and in personalizing education for students. McCallum will be honored at the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals fall conference in Columbia on October 1st. Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer said. “Dr. McCallum has been a valuable member of our leadership team for a long time.” Under the direction of McCallum and Principal Wood, the graduation rate at WHS has increased to 89.4 percent, three percent higher than the state average, with 74.9 percent of graduates attending a college or technical school.

The KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week is Senior Taylor Covington with the New Haven Track and Field Team. Taylor earned All-State honors medaling in four events at the state track meet at Lincoln University in Jefferson City Friday and Saturday. She ran anchor on the 4X800 relay team that finished in sixth place.

Commencement, it is said, is a beginning. Yet graduations are also the end of an era--for students and their parents. For the kids, it's a time of excitement and promise. For parents, it's a bit more bittersweet.

What will the future hold for the Class of 2015? Time will tell.

My youngest has now graduated from high school. Back in 1980, I was the youngest of my family who graduated.
